Improving Your Car

When my car died for the fifth time this year, I knew that I needed to do something to improve things. I decided to start looking around for little upgrades that I could do on my own, and I ended up completely replacing the oil and changing out the air filter. The difference was astounding. My car seemed to have more power, and so I decided to keep going with my little tune-ups. This blog is all about improving your car one thing at a time and knowing what to do if you encounter car problems when you are on the road.

Signs Your Clutch May Need To Be Repaired

If you have never owned a car with a manual transmission before, you may not know the signs of a clutch that is wearing out. A clutch often gives you many warning signs that it is nearing the end of its lifespan before it stops working altogether. If you miss these signs, you may find yourself in a potentially hazardous situation where the clutch stops working or burns out. Here are a few of the top signs that your clutch may need to be replaced.

The Clutch is Sticking

One of the things that you may notice when your clutch is beginning to go bad is that the clutch is sticking. This may mean one of two different things. Initially, you may notice that the clutch is harder to shift or move. You may have to push harder or use more force to push the clutch and get your car to shift gears. As the clutch wears further, you may notice that the clutch is sticking to such a degree that your car slips gears or you cannot shift into the gear you want to be in.

The Clutch is Shaking

Another sign that you may notice if your clutch needs to be repaired is a clutch that is shaking. When a clutch is new and in a good state, the clutch is sturdy and stable as you shift it from one gear to another. But when the clutch is nearing the end of its lifespan, you may feel it heavily vibrating, rattling or shaking when you place your hand on it to shift gears. If you can feel this when shifting gears, it may be time for a new clutch.

You Smell Burning When Shifting

The last sign that you may notice when your clutch is nearing the end of its life is a burning smell. When your clutch is nearing the end of its life, you may notice a strong metallic smell given off as you shift gear. This metallic smell is caused by the metal on the clutch wearing off. But the longer you use the wearing clutch, the more the smell shifts from a metallic smell to a burning smell. This is because the metal has worn and now the clutch itself is burning away. This is a tell-tale sign that you need to replace your clutch right away.

Just like the brakes on your car, a clutch will give you many warning signs that it is going bad and should be replaced. If you notice any of the above signs, your clutch is warning you that it is time for a new one. Schedule an appointment with your preferred auto mechanic when these signs first present to have your clutch replaced.
